Geometrical Model of Lower Extremity

  • Original language description

Finite element method can be used to analyze new types of knee joint replacements. To perform more realistic computer simulations it is necessary to build a complex model of a knee joint. Using Visible Human Project (VHP) computer tomography images, National Library of Medicine (Bethesda, USA), we created a 3D volumic model modifiable in Unigraphics (UGS, Dallas, USA). It consists of all three main bones of the lower limb, i.e. femur, tibia and fibula, and patella also. In addition, to be able to position biarticular muscles with origins on pelvis, we decided to employ the VRML model prepared by Marco Viceconti (Laboratorio di Tecnologia Medica, Istituti Ortopedici Rizzoli, Bologna, Italy: http://www.tecno.ior.it/VRLAB/). Then, having already assembledthis geometrical model, based on a study of a lower limb anatomy and a published literature concerning the knee joint, we added major muscles’ lines of action of the knee.
