Mechanobiology of the cartilage - mathematical model

  • Original language description

Articular cartilage is essential for appropriate joint function. It provides a smooth surface that reduces the friction within a joint in motion. The healing capacity of articular cartilage is poor and, once injured, the tissue may undergo progressive destruction. The mechanism of the cartilage replacing during the lifetime is unclear. The aim of this paper is to propose a new theory cartilage remodelling, based on the study of contact stress distribution in normal and diseased human hip joints.
