Biogas Production Enhancement by Ultrasonic Disintegration of Biomass
Original language description
The main goal of this work was to evaluate the influence of ultrasonic disintegration of biomass (maize silage grown for energetics purposes) on biogas (BG) production in comparison with conventional systems. Application of ultrasonic waves causes cell lysis, increase of particles' specific area and sonochemical splitting of complex organic compounds (fats, proteins, polysaccharides) into simpler ones. As a result, faster and more efficient conversion of substrate into methane is achieved. Parallel experiments in CSTR bioreactors BIOENGINEERING 75L were carried out to evaluate the effect of sonication on anaerobic digestion process. Assessment of disintegration process effectiveness was based on measurements of COD in liquid phase of substrate samples. The methane yield was determined by continuous measurement of biogas flow rate and composition. The resulting methane yield enhancement ranged between 16.9 and 29.5 %. Finally, an energy balance of the process was performed.
