    The control of air flow through HVAC systems is usually executed by throttling. The most frequently used control elements are control dampers. When closing these elements reduce the free flow cross-section and increase pressure losses. As a result the flow rate increases in the reduced cross-section and consequently, in most control elements, the acoustic energy generated into the environment grows very remarkably. This is caused by the very limited flow cross-section which can be qualified as a slot, i.e. an opening with a markedly smaller width compared with its length. The main topic of this paper is to present the results of experimental measurements and analyses of the causes of generation of acoustic energy in small holes and/or slots with a variable width. The measured levels of the sound power for individual types of slots are related with non-dimensional similarity criteria.
