Specifics of Laser Welding of Ductile Iron, Cr-Mo Steel and their Dissimilar Butt Joints
Original language description
Laser welding of 1) ductile iron, 2) Cr-Mo low alloy steel and 3) their dissimilar butt joints was executed. Both materials were separately subjected to research of their laser weldability. Spattering and melt flows during laser welding were observed using high speed video cameras and also X-ray transmission real-time observation system. The materials showed very different behaviour in respect to cracking, spattering, underfilling, melt flows and so on. In ductile iron, cracking due to cementite formation, spattering and underfilling occurred easily. For low alloy steel, solidification cracking was the problem. In dissimilar welding, the solidification process, the consequent weld metal phases, hardness and other properties were significantly different. To produce sound welds in welding dissimilar metals, a Ni-based filler wire and the laser beam misalignment were investigated, and the effects on the prevention of cracking were confirmed.
