Original language description
We have developed a binary gas mixture analyzer based on measurement of sound velocity, from which it is possible to identify the mixture by comparison with a look-up table of speed of sound calculated as a function of gas mixture composition from an appropriate equation of state. The sound velocity is acquired from measurement of the transit time of ultrasonic pulses over a known distance. The generation of the ultrasound signal, its detection and the measurement of the transit time are made using dedicated electronics developed for this project. The instrument can operate over a range of temperature and pressure from -40°C to 80°C and up to 3.5MPa. High precision measurements of the temperature and pressure are necessary for accurate mixture measurement. The electronics communicates the measured data into a supervisory computer running the PVSS-II Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software package, under which the gas mixture analysis is made.
