A comparison of strain gauges and FBG sensors in case of measurement of large deformations
Original language description
The article discusses suitability of FBG sensors, attached to the surface of a steel specimen, for a measuring of elastic-plastic strains as an alternative to strain gauges (SG). The installation of fiber optic sensors on a surface of the specimen has its limitations, mainly in the strain transfer from the specimen surface to the fiber coating and from the coating to the glass core of sensor. Ability of surface mounted FBG sensors to measure large strains and their suitability for local fatigue damage monitoring during cyclic loading was tested.
