    Problem with Nickel Alloy 686 Closure Welds

    There are a variety of applications where we are required to join carbon steels or nickel alloy 625 (see composition in following table) to duplex (22 Cr) or super duplex (25 Cr) stainless steels. In years past, Nickel alloy 625 was used for joining these dissimilar materials. However; several years ago, this practice was brought into question. The source of the original concern is not known, but it is contended that the Nb in the Nickel alloy 625 will combine with the nitrogen in the duplex stainless steel and form brittle niobium nitrides. In certain applications, we use niobium free nickel alloy weld consumables when a nickel alloy was needed for welding duplex stainless steels.
