This paper presents the development of a controller for a high-speed permanent magnet synchronous motor based on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA). The controller was tested on a motor with maximal speed 42000 RPM, nominal speed 25000 RPM, nominal torque 1,2 Nm and nominal current 11 A. The novel controller design shows much promise to handle field-oriented control for higher speeds than previously available with digital signal processors. According to our tests, the controller is able to handle speeds at least 40x higher.
