Structural constitutive model of human vena cava reflecting collagen orientation and waviness
Original language description
Microstructural constitutive models of blood vessels are nowadays widely studied. However, there is a lack of detailed quantitative descriptions of the internal architecture in the literature. The aim of this study is to contribute to filling this gap. Ahistomorphometric analysis of sections of human vena cava inferior was performed in order to obtain mathematical models of the angular distribution and the waviness of collagen fiber. The results were implemented into a structural model of the mechanical response of the vein. It was assumed that the typical nonlinear mechanical behavior of the tissue originates in the gradual load-carrying engagement of wavy collagen fibers. A comparison of the model with uniaxial tensile experiments revealed that theYoung elastic modulus of the collagen fiber in vena cava inferior is approx. 570 MPa. The study suggested that the character of the angular fiber distribution is the same in the media and in the adventitia; however, the peaks are shifted
