Biomedical applications require materials with low density, high strength and low elastic modulus in relation to metal implants to match the bone properties. In case of polymorphic titanium, the advantage of combining the properties of alpha and beta phases is utilized for example by Ti-6Al-4V alloy (G5), where higher chemical stability and lower elastic modulus has beta component, while lower weight and higher hardness are advantages of alpha phase1. Thermal treatment is the way of changing the structural properties, where ratio of beta phase is increased by quenching from beta temperatures, resulting in encresed surface hardness2. The scope of present work is to investigate the surface integrity of a system G5/DLC comparing it to the system G51100H/DLC, involving thermally treated structures in the interlayer region, by obtaining the surface hardness profiles for both the DLC coating and the mentioned systems using nanoindentation with Berkovich indenter.
