Macerator - the new solution for disintegration of biomass at biogas plants.
Original language description
The new type of disintegrator was developed in order to decrease energy requirement related to final particle sizes, to increase biogas yield and biodegradability and to perform mechanical disintegration as a cost effective preliminary operation. The test experiments of developed grinder finally confirmed these facts. The reached final particle size of wheat straw particles was lower than 10 mm with a smooth surface and with significant ruptures in microstructure. The energy requirement for the size reduction of untreated straw to the size mentioned above was 50 kWh per ton TS (total solids). The increase in biogas yield was by 23 % and in related net electrical energy profit (by CHP generation respecting electrical efficiency 35 %) by 186 kWhE per tonTS. Considering the results, the grinder has a high potential to be a practical mechanical technique, an economical and effective pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass, especially for herbaceous crops such as straw.
