Modification of the Houldcroft test for TIG welding of Al alloys
Original language description
Defects control of aluminum alloys? welds is an important industrial issue and must be carefully examined, because defects such as hot solidification cracking occur often. The Houldcroft test is a simple and reliable test method for determining the hot cracking sensitivity used for MIG or TIG welding. For the purpose of testing AlMg4,5MnZr alloy it was needed to modify the Houldcroft test to obtain representative results. U-groove from the bottom side of the AlMg4,5MnZr plate was created. TIG welding was done, without and with different filler wires. Base metal cracking susceptibility was A=65 %, with filler AlMg4.5MnZr susceptibility was A=85 %, with AlMg5Cr A=75 %, and the best results were obtained with AlSi5 filler with A=5 %, which is the best filler metal. The hot cracking sensitivity inherently high for AlMg4,5MnZr alloy was successfully decreased using AlSi5 filler wire for TIG welding.
