Panel methods allow quick solution of potential flow around both simple and complex geometries. They are suitable as design tools and in optimization algorithms, where the focus is on speed of solution and where the dissipation, viscosity and turbulencedo not play an important role. The paper considers the possibilities and limitations of current panel methods in connection with turbomachines and describes the development of a panel solver based on Hess formulation of a 3D panel method adapted for usewith internal and external flows in turbomachinery.
