Approach to thermal error modeling and compensation of six-spindle automatic lathe

This paper is a continuation of scientific work on the modelling of highly nonlinear machine tool (MT) thermal errors using thermal transfer functions (TTF). The method is dynamic and its modelling and calculation speed are suitable for real-time applications. The method does not require interventions into the MT structure and uses a minimum of additional gauges. Models based on TTF were successfully applied to various kinds of milling machines. This paper focuses on the applicability of the modelling approach to a completely different MT type from the point of view of the operation principle and mechanical structure: a six-spindle automatic lathe. Mutual separation of heat sources participating in resultant thermal error is very complicated in this case and it is necessary to solve the whole MT thermal behaviour as one unit for all TCPs (tool center points) simultaneously.
