Modelling of Composite Spindle Rams
Original language description
The paper focuses on modelling of hybrid composite thick-walled components for machine tools industry. A case study of a composite spindle ram was performed focusing on modelling the spindle ram to obtain its mechanical properties – static and dynamic stiffness; mode shapes and its frequencies. The spindle ram was made as a hybrid structure, combining carbon/epoxy layers from two types of fibres with significantly different modulus, damping layers, adhesive and steel reinforcements. For the complicated structure, options for FE modelling and the structure’s homogenization were discussed and tested. The approaches were compared with the results of experimental modal analysis; a match between FEA and experiment is discussed together with possible sources of errors on the side of models. To evaluate the benefits of the composite specimen, the comparison of the hybrid composite ram was made with a reference spindle ram, both experimentally and computationally.
