Comparison of Mechanically Driven and Exhaust Gas Driven Boosting Systems under Steady State and Transient Operation
Original language description
The research is carried out by means of simulation and deals with air management systems of light duty internal combustion engines (ICE), including both spark ignition and compression ignition ones. The goal of the paper is to compare ICE boosted by the exhaust gas driven turbocharger with ICE boosted by the mechanically driven positive displacement supercharger in terms of performance, efficiency, fuel consumption, drivability, energy distribution and other aspects that influence gas exchange phase. These criteria are evaluated in both steady state and transient conditions. Moreover, different supercharger types, sizes and placement are studied. Results of the research are aimed to help find optimal boosting system for standardized or real life drive cycles.
