Origin of Russet Coloring of Hot-Dip Galvanized Coating
Original language description
Galvanized coating provides the steel substrate with cathodic protection. In most electrolytes, zinc has lower electrode potential than iron and in the formed galvanic cell it acts as an anode on which oxidation takes place, while iron transitions to the state of immunity - it does not corrode. However, despite this natural phenomenon, sometimes galvanized parts display russet corrosion products of iron. This rust can originate from the corroding steel or from the ferrous ions released from coating.
