Probabilistic assessment of the Propeller Blade Primary Failure
Original language description
A propeller is a very important part of a propeller aircraft and its failure can have catastrophic consequences for the aircraft. Very low probability of primary failure occurrence per propeller flight hour is required (10-8) by Civil Aviation Agencies. A classical deterministic approach based on aeronautical regulations with the application of safety factors was compared with a new stochastic approach to predicting life with the required low probability of failure. Probabilistic assessment based on Monte Carlo method, which uses input data from the blade fatigue tests and steady/vibratory stress analysis was performed. Stochastically calculated flight hours are a function of failure probability and combination with the results from deterministic method, which are using series of safety coefficients, has resulted in linkage between safety coefficients and failure probability.
