Large portion of emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and associated reactive nitrogen compounds from combustion engines, currently a major contributor to urban air pollution, could be avoided by good engineering practices and responsible use of technology. This work provides a brief summary of measurement needs and approaches and of the potential of transmission spectroscopy in mid-infrared region for a variety of quantitative measurements.
