Predicting Turbomachinery Performance by Detailed 3-D CFD Modelling
Original language description
The paper is focused on turbomachinery modeling while using 3-D CFD approach. Different turbomachinery was considered – due to paper size limitations, only automotive radial turbine data are presented. The paper provides an overview of recent results of 2 different radial turbine designs – a classical turbine and a twin-scroll turbine. Simulation data are compared with typical experimental ones (i.e., mass flow rate and efficiency) while performing different sensitivity studies. These are focused on meshes, numerics, turbulence models, rotor movement approaches, etc. General conclusions are drawn and `best practice’ recommendations are provided. There are some open questions still to be answered. However, the main conclusion is that 3-D CFD provides a reliable tool for prediction of turbomachinery performance – mass flow is usually predicted well while efficiency is a bit more problematic, however the qualitative trends are correctly captured.
