Experimental identification and modelling of specific energy requirement for knife milled beech chips in dependence on particle size characteristics and moisture

  • Original language description

The experimental identification of specific energy requirement was studied concerning beech chips characteristics (biomass flowrate, size reduction ratio, moisture 0.5–30.9 wt %) and knife mill variables (screen sieves 0.75–6.00 mm in size, peripheral rotor velocity of 10.2–20.4 ms-1). Regarding the conventional approach in modelling of energy demand, it was found that the use of Rittinger comminution law is impossible due to the significant effect of moisture on biomass characteristics and energy requirement, especially. Thus, the original model predicting specific energy requirement was derived. The model allows predicting specific energy demand for given biomass concerning its flowrate, moisture, shear strength, input and output particle sizes, and mill variables. The methods of its calibration and validation are presented.
