The effect of moisture on specific energy demand for knife-milled wheat straw

  • Original language description

The mechanical size reduction of lignocellulosic biomass is usually the initial processing step in the production technologies of advanced biofuels. The contribution aims to study and model the relationship between specific energy requirements, biomass characteristics, and mill variables. The wheat straw of moistures 3.1 wt %, 8.1 wt % and 22.9 % were reduced in size by knife mill under peripheral rotor speed of 10.2 and 20.4 m s-1 and several screens with drum openings of 6.0, 4.0, 2.0, 1.0 and 0.75 mm. The experimental set-up was based on mutual combinations of biomass moisture, screen sieves and peripheral rotor speed. Particle size characteristics and active power were experimentally identified for each experimental run. Applying conventional comminution models known as Rittinger, Bond, or Kick laws, it was found that mutual relationship can be precisely expressed by Rittinger law. It means that the specific energy requirement is directly proportional to the particle surface increase. Furthermore, the Rittinger constant CR was found to be directly proportional to biomass moisture.
