Biocomposite bone tissue replacements
Original language description
Bone tissue provides a good example of a dynamic tissue with unique regenerative and remodelling abilities. However, for various reasons, many traumatic and non-traumatic injuries require treatment that involves the application of artificial bone substitutes. The use of materials in medicine has always been based on the level of knowledge at the time in terms of both the knowledge of the materials and the potential for their processing, as well as with concern to understanding the function of the organ being treated. The historical development of the understanding of the key properties of bone tissue highlights three main aspects that are important for its functional replacement - bone as a structure, bone as a material and bone as a system. All three interrelated aspects have shaped current approaches to the design and preparation of bone tissue substitutes. At the current level of knowledge of bone tissue, we define bone as a non-homogeneous, orthotropic or transversely isotropic composite material composed of both organic and inorganic components and, importantly, as a living organ with the ability to functionally adapt based on the complex biological interactions of cells and the surrounding environment. No single-phase material is able to provide all the essential features of bone and/or other calcified tissues. Biocomposites, a special class of composite materials in which at least one of the phases has a biological origin, are able to mimic the structural, chemical and mechanical properties and the biological performance of native tissue. In addition, biocomposites are being increasingly used in tissue engineering applications, which represents the latest generation in the development of materials and approaches used to treat bone tissue.
