Rotating photobioreactor for cultivation of snow microalgae under extreme climatic conditions

  • Original language description

Polar and snow microalgae can be used for the production of biofuels, fertilizers, food supplements, animal feed or products for the cosmetic or pharmaceutical industry. Based on the principle of circular economy, microalgae are also used in biorefinery concepts for wastewater treatment or capturing waste CO2 from industrial exhaust gases. The transfer of technical solutions and experimental results from laboratories and semi-operational facilities to operational commercial scale has not yet been very successful. Most of the existing cultivation technologies only reach commercial application in locations with more sunlight hours and more favorable temperatures throughout the year (e.g. Spain, Italy). Therefore, the application of cultivation technologies in the Czech Republic is often very complicated or even unfeasible. One of the possibilities of approaching an effective and economically meaningful use of cultivation systems for microalgae production may be the use of strains of snow or polar microalgae that have been able to adapt to the extreme climatic conditions of polar regions. Adaptation of cultivation systems to polar and snow microalgae species could subsequently enable industrial scale applications to reach commercial scale.
