Characteristics of Aluminosilicate Additives for Potassium Capture during Biomass Combustion

  • Original language description

This paper focuses on capturing potassium within thermally stable structures using aluminosilicate additives, which are dosed along with the fuel into the combustion process, forming a solid bond with potassium ions. The objective of the study is to investigate potassium capture methods using selected additives, including two types of kaolins and three types of metakaolins. Additionally, the ash resulting from the combustion of lignite coal was used as an alternative for potassium capture. Wheat husks in the form of pellets were chosen as thefuel due to its higher potassium content. The mixtures of fuel with individual additives were prepared at weight ratios of 10:1, 20:1, and 30:1 (the ratio fuel:additive). The samples were exposed to three different temperatures 700, 800 and 900°C in muffle furnace, to see the effect of combustion temperature on potassium capture. Subsequently, XRF analysis of the burned samples was compared with their original state and the effect of individual additives on potassium capture was determined. The experimental results indicate that the selected additives effectively captured potassium during the combustion of wheat husks. Furthermore, the results reveal that the amount of captured potassium increases with rising temperatures.
