Computational challenges in mathematical modeling of hemolysis

  • Original language description

The mathematical and computational modeling of hemolysis is one of the most challenging problems in contemporary biomedical fluid mechanics. The difficulties stem from multiple factors, some of which will be presented and discussed in this brief overview. From the fluid mechanics or physiological point of view, blood can be considered as a suspension of blood cells in blood plasma. The blood cells are of different type (erythrocytes, leukocytes, platelets etc.) having different size, material properties and concentrations (counts) and behavior under flow. From the point of view of hemolysis, the red blood cells (erythrocytes) naturally play the key role, sharing some important properties with platelets. The ability of red blood cells to orient itself with respect to flow, change their shape or migrate and aggregate, significantly affects the behavior of blood flow and our ability to accurately predict it by means of mathematical models and numerical simulations. This means, that the flow of blood is rather a complex fluid-structure interaction problem, that is often just approximated as a fluid flow problem with non-Newtonian rheology. Therefore the blood rheology is one of the key factors in modeling of flow induced hemolysis.
