Managing R&D in Academia: A Showcase
Original language description
This study explores managing technical R&D projects, focusing on developing cost-effective soldering technology. Existing workplace practices, such as vendor consolidation and 5S, were observed and their effectiveness analyzed. Based on a further analysis of applicability and the need for several management tools, a set of recommendations was made, including the adoption of techniques such as Gantt charts and other time management methods for improved planning, communication, and efficiency. The study emphasizes the importance of a dynamic, human-centered approach to R&D management in academic settings. Additionally, it highlights the need for flexibility in managing project timelines, balancing research goals with publication requirements, and overcoming resource limitations. The findings suggest that combining informal, intuitive management practices with formal frameworks can improve project outcomes. By adopting tools like the Eisenhower Matrix, SMART goals, and risk management techniques, the project’s efficiency and alignment with industry demands can be significantly enhanced. These insights can inform future R&D projects in similar academic environments.
