Active Capacitive Buck Boost Balancer for LiFePO Cells with Combined Analog and Digital Control
Original language description
This paper presents an active balancing circuit for LiFePO4 cells. The circuit was designed to work from 2 cells up to 16 cells and a nominal balancing current of 2A. The current setpoint can be changed with a voltage signal from a microcontroller. The circuit however works independently from the microcontroller, increasing safety of the device and decreasing microcontroller load. The circuit is comprised from a bidirectional buck boost DC/DC converter charging a 20F super-capacitor, cell switches, current sense amplifier, current and voltage limiter and PWM signal generation. The current is sensed on the inductor´s parasitic resistance to save cost of a current sensor. The current limiter actively limits the charging current if necessary by shortening the PWM duty cycle. Similarly the capacitor voltage is measured and when the maximal value is reached the charging is stopped automatically in hardware, thereby lowering the microcontroller load. The circuit was experimentally verified and experimental results are presented
