Investigation of low altitude orbits around selected bodies of the solar system
Original language description
The need for better understanding of operations in proximity to other planets becomes more important with the amount of space missions increasing. Many possible mission tasks, ranging from surface mapping to sample retrieval, must be supported by satellites operating on lowest possible orbits. This paper focuses on these orbits in proximity to various planets and moons of the Solar system. Firstly, a simplified atmospheric model for planets and moons of the Solar System is established. This is then used for the selection of bodies of interest by means of the investigation of the drag and its influence on the orbit. This allows lowest acceptable orbits to be established under variety of circumstances. These can range from temporary orbits awaiting return of the away mission, e.g. manned or unmanned sample retrieval mission, long term orbits with low orbital station-keeping costs or planned disposal and minimization of space debris.
