Combustion characteristics of dried sewage sludge in a bubbling fluidized bed combustor

  • Original language description

This paper presents an experimental study on the combustion of four dried sewage sludges in a 30 kWth bubbling fluidized bed combustor, aiming to characterize the formation of gaseous pollutants across a broad range of operating conditions. The study focuses on the effects of fluidized bed temperature, combustion air stoichiometry, and staged air supply. The ashes from the sludges were successfully utilized as fluidized bed materials without agglomeration issues and exhibited varying capacities for SO2 self-capture, which were significantly influenced by the fluidized bed temperature. Additionally, the temperature affected the conversion of fuel-bound nitrogen into NO, N2O, and HCN. Combustion air stoichiometry strongly impacted the formation of CO, NO, and N2O, while staged air supply effectively reduced the concentrations of NO, CO, and N2O. The findings indicate that optimizing combustion parameters can reduce the concentrations of harmful gaseous pollutants, though not to levels deemed acceptable. Consequently, secondary flue gas treatment measures are necessary downstream of the combustor.
