Reliability Risks of tin-rich alloys for Electronic Industry
Original language description
Cause of EU directive the electronic industry has moved forward with lead-free technology at the assembly and component level. Tin and tin-rich alloys have been considered as good and cheap alternatives for component finishes and solder alloys. Althoughpure tin and tin-rich alloys have some specific reliability risks which have to be evaluated during a product's design. Among these specifics belong especially tin whiskers and last but not least tin pest. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the different reliability risks caused by pure tin and tin-rich alloys, to propose mitigation practices and its optical detection methods.
