Wavelet Transform Based Hybrid Perceptual Audio Coder
Original language description
Several types of techniques exist for perceptual audio coding. Each of them has its strength and weakness. They often show their best performance only on the audio signals with specific properties. For example, the modified Discrete Cosine Transform (mDCT) adopted by most state-of-the-art perceptual coders works very well for coding the harmonic signals but its performance degrades significantly on the transient signals. The paper proposes an algorithm that decomposes the input audio signal into harmonic part, transient part and noise-like part. Each part of the signal is then coded separately by using the most appropriate technique to increase the overall coding efficiency. The key components in our proposed scheme are the Modified Discrete Cosine Transform and the Wavelet Packet decomposition. Several types of the encoding schemes were proposed and evaluated.
