High Speed Timestamping in Microcontroller Using Direct Memory Access
Original language description
In distributed measurement systems timestamps of every measured values could be used. These timestamps can be either computed from a limited number of known timestamps captured during the measurement or by timestamping every measured value. This paper presents timestamping technique in a general purpose microcontroller. Every measured value is stored with its timestamp using Direct Memory Access (DMA) controller. Capturing timestamps using DMA enables the microcontroller to timestamp values nearly up tothe rate of the internal processor clock. Jitter caused by other timestamping techniques namely timestamping at interrupt level is also eliminated because timestamps are captured as soon as possible after an event occur.
