Advanced Control Methods in Transmission Systems
Original language description
This paper reviews key developments in applications of advanced control methods in transmission systems. Such applications appear in many aspects of voltage control and monitoring. FACTS or "Flexible AC Transmission Systems" is a term that has been suggested for the devices to control bulk power flow in transmission systems. The main value of FACTS lies in improving transmission capability, increasing the flexibility of power flow control, for controlling voltage and possibly additional advantages in lower voltage systems (e.g. distribution systems). The goal of this issue paper is to examine technologies that can be used to increase the grid's power-transfer capability. FACTS controllers not only provide the same benefits as conventional compensatorswith mechanicallycontrolled switches in steady state but also improve the dynamic and transient performance of the power system. There is presented a solution of using Phase shifting transformers that compensate reactive power, control po
