Methodology for Lightning Protection of Medium and High Voltage Networks
Original language description
This paper critically analyses different theoretical methods of medium (MV) and high (HV) voltage networks in order to prevent damages caused by lightning. Medium voltage networks distances suggested by international standards and recommendations (CIGRE,IEEE, etc) are critically scrutinized. Shielding protection techniques in high voltage networks are risk assessed emphasizing successful examples of uses in the Argentinean network & power generation market. The MV approach is assessed by means of a critical ex-post analysis of the work performed in the City Bell MV grid in order to evaluate the maximum admissible distance between arresters and transformers including transformer voltage (Ua) and maximum distance (L). Calculations are detailed, as wellas, usual configuration levels to establish the practical links between lightning arresters and protected appliances. The HV approach is considered by means of two critical studies: an existing 132 kV power line with triangular dispositio
