    Biomass is the most important renewable energy source for many of Central and Eastern European countries. The Czech Republic?s upgraded State Energy Policy assumes growing contribution of energy biomass from approximately 100 PJ to 240 PJ especially areaof district heating by the year 2040. Biomass as the domestic energy source plays not only important role in RES utilization development, but can also contribute to secure local energy needs in case of critical situations characterized by the failure offossil fuels delivery. The paper resents methodology for assessment of biomass potential which could be used to secure energy needs in two types of critical situations ? temporary failure of energy sources up to one year (immediate short term crisis) and continually growing deficit of energy sources (long=term permanent crisis).
