The article deals with the design of an optimal variant of a public lighting system. Calculations are performed on a model transport communication of length 1 km in urban areas, where it is calculated with the construction of brand new lighting system. The aim is to evaluate the benefits of the application of LED light sources in a confrontation with established discharge light sources. Economic calculations include expenditures for a construction, operation, maintenance and repairs for the operation of30 years. The decisive economic criterion is the NPV of expenditure with respect to the amount of sub spending.
