    In general, lightweight design concepts such as the use of composites often lead to impaired structural vibration properties. Active control solutions have been recognized as a valuable path to reduce those vibrations, wherein piezoelectric actuators are widely used due to their lightweight, large actuation force and easy integration. A good understanding of such smart structures helps to predict the structural dynamic behavior and to design controllers. In this paper, the modeling of laminated composite with surface-bonded piezo actuators is taken as subject investigated. An Equivalent Force Actuation Modeling (EFAM) approach is proposed to simplify the smart structure modeling. Also an experiment on a laminated composite with a surface-bonded piezo actuator is carried out. Modal analysis is carried out to evaluate the dynamic changes of the structure caused by the presence of piezo actuator. The EFAM model dynamic prediction performance is evaluated using test data. The EFAM model is shown to be consistent with the experimental results.
