Comparison of two HE-AAC Codec Implementations Based on Objective Quality Assessment

Although normatives of codecs usually contain typical Q-R (Quality-Rate) curves, there are not such curves comparing different implementations of the same codec. In this paper, we describe the experiment of assessing the audio quality of two implementations of the HE-AAC codec created by Fraunhofer institute (FDK AAC (libfdk-aac from FFmpeg) and FhG AAC (enc_fhgaac from Winamp)) in three profiles (AAC-LC, HE-AAC v1 and HE-AAC v2). For assessing the quality, a PEAQ algorithm was used. The quality assessment was performed on the ITU-R BS.1387 audio sample database. The bitrate of samples was chosen from 24 to 112 kbps in 8 kbps increments. The experiment showed, that although the Winamp codec performed generally better than the FFmpeg one, the quality of AAC-LC and HE-AAC v1 does not differ dramatically. However, it is not case of the HE-AAC v2 profile in FDK AAC, which gave very bad results unlike the same profile in FhG AAC codec. It was proved, that, based on the difference in quality, the two implementations are different.
