Characterisation of Diamond-coated Screws after Their 12-Months Implantation in Rabbit Femurs
Original language description
The SEM analysis detected microscopically localized delamination of the diamond coating from the screw and presence of non-diamond material on the surface of the implant. The optical images and corresponding Raman spectroscopy maps confirmed partial delamination of diamond from the screw surface. The adhesion of the diamond coating to strained parts of screws may thus not be sufficient for such hard tissue implants, and there is a possible risk of material residues in bones. On the other hand, the presence of non-diamond material was confirmed as well, indicating good adhesion of tissue to diamond. The biological tests also showed good osteointegration. The impact on possible applications in bone implants is discussed.
