A method for improving the performance of a variational quantum algorithm, VQA, the method comprising the steps of: (a) receiving a quantum circuit for implementing the VQA, the quantum circuit being parameterised by a set of quantum circuit parameters; (b) formulating a cost function of the VQA as a polynomial optimisation problem; (c) applying moment/Sums of Squares, SOS, relaxations to the polynomial optimisation problem to generate a hierarchy of semidefinite programming, SDP, relaxations that approximate the polynomial optimisation problem; (d) solving the SDP relaxations using classical optimisation algorithms; and (e) updating the quantum circuit parameters of the variational quantum algorithm based on the solution of the SDP relaxations.
