The Ivančice viaduct (Brno, Czech Republic) and Gustave Eiffel
Original language description
The railway viaduct near the village of Ivančice by Brno has a unique position among the bridge structures in the Czech Republic. Together with the bridge at Chrást near Plzeň, it is associated with the name of the world-famous French architect Gustave Eiffel. Although historical research has shown that Eiffel was not involved in the construction of both bridges, the implementation of the construction of the bridges in the Czech lands (the Czech Kingdom) was based on the transfer of technical knowledge from the Western countries to the Habsburg Monarchy, of which the Czech lands were a part in the second half of the 19th century. At that time, the Czech lands already had a well-established and well-functioning structure of technical education, which certainly could adopt this information from abroad and apply it in technical and industrial practice with some delay behind its countries of origin. Eiffel is also associated with the Ivančice viaduct probably because the structure itself, which bears a distinct visual resemblance to the Eiffel Tower, was made by the French firm Société J.-F.Cail et Cie. The aim of this article is to present the design and construction of the bridge, its importance concerning the development of industrialization (urbanization) and therefore the railway network in the Habsburg Monarchy and the Czech lands, as well as the current view of the viaduct from the point of view of cultural and technical European heritage.
