Cast Iron Tower Clockworks Manufacturing and the Role of Prague Polytechnic
Original language description
In 1809, Franz Joseph Gerstner and the mechanic Josef Boˇzek at the Prague Polytechnic designed a tower clock for serial production by casting. This clock was manufactured by the Wrbna’s Kom 'arov Ironworks. Later, around 1834, another all-cast iron clock was built by the entrepreneur and mechanic H. A. Luz in Sˇlapanice near Brno. These clocks were later also produced in series. Examples of both of these clocks have survived and have recently been identified at Kˇrivokl 'at Castle in Central Bohemia and the Vanovice municipality in Blansko Region, South Moravia. The serial production of all-cast iron tower clockworks in the Czech lands in the first third of the 19th century is unique even on a European scale.
