THE SUPPORTIVE ROLE OF THE EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION INNOVATION – THE CASE OF EUROTEQ

  • Original language description

As the world rapidly changes and the challenges increase, the need to form strategic alliances is of paramount importance to advance exchange of knowledge and technology among international institutions. Nowadays, the establishment of European alliances in higher education has turned to be a suitable vehicle to transfer innovations in teaching models, to initiate new forms of research collaborations, to foster mobility by eliminating administrative barriers and by creating bridges to spread the European values. This practice paper aims to emphasize the role of relatively newly formed European University alliances in the engineering education transformation and implementation of new teaching formats within the higher education sector in Europe. The European Universities Initiative that supports creation of European University alliances leads to formation of learning networks which enhance the institutional capabilities of European universities to tackle the main challenges of the engineering education transformation for needs of the 21st century and increases their worldwide competitiveness. We focused on the experiences of the EuroTeQ Engineering University and used them as an example of institutional development that could be supported and enhanced within the university alliance. In this paper, the rationale for the construction of a European alliance in engineering education, as well as the goals and ambitions are presented. Experiences and achievements of the first phase of the EuroTeQ development and the main activities are also introduced as a catalysator of good practices for other universities supporting their further institutional formation. Finally, the importance of the European alliances in engineering education is discussed.
