DMap-Zero: A Lightweight Security-First Platform for Distributed IoT Applications

  • Original language description

Distributed applications for Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and Internet of Things (IoT) have shown promise in improving many domains, from distributed computing to novel security algorithms. However, the development of these applications is often hindered by the need to solve complex infrastructure challenges in networking, security, and deployment. This paper presents DMap-Zero, a platform designed to handle this underlying complexity, providing a secure environment that allows researchers to focus exclusively on their application logic. Leveraging containerization and a zero-trust overlay network, DMap-Zero offers a framework for simplified management, secure communication, and micro-segmentation of distributed application modules in one package. We present the platform’s architecture and evaluate its performance, demonstrating it as a practical solution for development of distributed applications in resource-constrained IoT and CPS environments.
