The Load-Carrying Capacity of a Cylindrical Shell with Corrosion Damage
Original language description
The Problem of the Load-Carrying Capacity of a Thin-Walled Cylindrical Shell, Damaged by Pitting and/or General Corrosion and Subjected to Internal Pressure, is Solved For the Concrete Pipe of 520 mm in Diameter and 5.9 mm in Wall Thickness, Made From Low-C Steel ČSN 411373. Both the Engineering Procedure and the Numerical Modelling Using the Finite Element Method Realize the Solution. Both Approaches are Based on the Attainment of the Limit State in the Region of the Thinned Wall of the Shell. The Engineering Procedure Consists in Modification of the Maxey Formula For the Residual Strength of a Pipe Containing a Corrosion Defect. The Cut-Out of the Shell with a Specific Defect, Loaded by the Uniform Internal Pressure, is Used as the Numerical Model. Parametric Studies are Performed by Both Methods and a Graph is Plotted of the Dependence of the Defect Depth on its Length at the Instant of Failure of the Pipe For a Given Internal Operating Pressure.
