Possibilities of Using Fractal Geometry in Landscape System Assessment
Original language description
This contribution aims at outlining the basics of fractal geometry and its potential applications in landscape ecology. The article mainly focuses on the key constant - fractal dimension, which can be used to characterize shapes of boundaries of flat elements of the landscape, and shapes and lengths of line elements. This paper studies potential uses of fractal geometry in analysing space structures of landscape systems. Fractal geometry enables characterization of landscape systems, as well as comparison of different areas. In addition to fractal dimension, this paper also presents the traditional method of the landscape characteristic - the index of dominance. Both these categories are described and compared in detail. Consequently, they are appliedin the model sites.
