Design of Intermodal Freight Flows to the Hinterland in Bundling Networks
Original language description
Containerization and developments of transport systems to the inland have led to a time-space convergence and made market players revise and synchronize liner service schedules and associated hinterland networks. The bundling of freight flows in a limited number of transport nodes can be one of the driving forces in this development. The advantages of bundling concept consist in higher frequencies of services and destinations served, in an increase of the number initial/end terminals and in higher loadfactors. This paper compares bundling concepts for various situations, hereby assuming the presence of advanced exchange operations at exchange nodes. It is analysed and suggested the development of inland service. It is carried out configuration and bundling in the Hamburg-Rotterdam range with focus on the bundling in rail networks and bundling in barging network of container flows to the central Europe.
