Risks of Multiple Radar Coverages In Aeronautics
Original language description
European network of secondary surveillance radars Mode S provides essential data to Air Traffic Control Centers in general. Nowadays, the radars` operational parameters, specifically their ranges, and their locations result in a great number of areas within the European Airspace that lie in multiple radar coverages. It means that the aircraft are interrogated by two or more radars when flying in such areas. For example, the value for the Central European Airspace reaches 10 and more radars overlapping. On the one hand, the coverage redundancy may improve the quality of the surveillance to great extent as the data from more sensors are merged first. On the other, the excessive data communication among the aircraft systems and ground facilities may eventually lead to adverse effects. Firstly, the article discusses issues related to aircraft transponder occupancy due to the radars’ interrogations, particularly during the simultaneous beam scans. Secondly, a result obtained by a simulation method estimating the number of simultaneous radar scans will be presented. Finally, possible risks emerging from the radar network interconnection and excessive interrogating will be described briefly.
